1958: SÄNTIS takes off in plastics processing

With the production of the first yoghurt pots by injection moulding, SÄNTIS achieved a major breakthrough in the plastics industry and supplied the Swiss dairy industry with several million units per year before it opened up to new markets with additional processing technologies.

1960: The beginnings of extrusion blow moulding technology

In the 1960s people began to replace heavy glass bottles with lightweight, multifunctional bottles with individual shapes. These requirements were largely met with bottles made of polyethylene or PVC. The legendary Handy bottle was one of the first containers to leave the SÄNTIS assembly line.

In 2006, SÄNTIS decided to outsource this technology in order to concentrate on its core capabilities.

1972: Becoming a trendsetter with stretch blow moulding technology

After the PVC bottles had already secured itself in the field, the market was looking for more transparent applications, which enabled PET - a new material - to manifest itself. SÄNTIS acquired the necessary stretch blow moulding technology at the beginning of the 1970s and succeeded in launching the first PET bottle in Switzerland.

The yellow edible oil bottle is still available today in its original geometry at Migros.

As a result of further specialised focusing, SÄNTIS decided to divest this technology in 2016.

1975: The entry into flat film extrusion

The beginnings of flat film extrusion at SÄNTIS took place in 1975, when the first films were made of polystyrene (PS). This made it possible to replace the once heavy, injection moulded yoghurt pots with thermoformed pots, thus achieving massive material and cost savings.

1990: One step ahead

At the beginning of the 1990s, the SÄNTIS management recognised that the further development of mono film extrusion into multilayer film production could open up new markets for them. The first animal feed trays with an oxygen barrier were developed.

This step proved to be a very important milestone in the development of the company.

1991: Capsule world

With the development of barrier technology in the extrusion process, SÄNTIS soon succeeded in developing the first coffee capsule with long shelf life.

SÄNTIS is considered a pioneer in capsule systems. Together with Eric Favre, the inventor of the Nespresso capsule system, the company developed the first PP-EVOH coffee capsules back in 1991.

Since then, more than 10 different beverage capsule systems have been developed for different applications making SÄNTIS one of Europe's market leaders in this field.

2003: The restructuring of Säntis Batterien

For budget reasons, a strategic decision was taken at the beginning of 2003 to shut down the company's own battery production and establish a cooperation with a renowned Austrian battery manufacturer in order to continue marketing high-quality batteries under the SÄNTIS brand.

2008: Premium packaging for four-legged friends

As a recognised manufacturer of barrier packaging, SÄNTIS, together with the world's largest PET food manufacturer, succeeded in developing the first transparent PET food tray for dog food in 2008.

This premium packaging could impress with high transparency but also with optimal reclosability and an excellent product presentation.

2010: Company split

Until 2010, both the battery and packaging manufacturing companies operated under one name. With the rapid development of the packaging sector (which called for its own identification both in terms of space and content) SÄNTIS decided to set up the two companies independently. Since then, the plastics processing division has borne the name säntis packaging ag.

2015: "Sustainability is not an option, it's a responsibility."

Following this maxim, SÄNTIS decided in 2015 to equip its entire site in Rüthi with a central heat recovery system and to network it. The wasted heat from the production facilities is used to heat the entire production premises, saving valuable resources every year.

As a result, säntis packaging joined forces with EnAW (Energy Agency of Swiss Private Sector) in the same year to take an active part in its voluntary climate protection and energy efficiency improvement programme.

• In 2017, the effect of the measures on EnAW participants was 2,734 gigawatt hours of energy saved.
• In just four years, all participants have collectively already saved 485,948 tonnes of CO2. This corresponds to approx. 60,700 flights around the globe.

2016: Expansion of the injection moulding department

By concentrating on its core competencies, säntis packaging has increasingly focused in recent years on expanding its injection moulding know-how.

In 2016, säntis packaging put one of its largest injection moulds with an in-mould labelling technology into operation.

2017: Investments in the latest thermoforming technology

As part of its intensive specialisation in high-precision thermoforming applications, säntis packaging has recently invested further in state-of-the-art thermoforming lines.

With the largest thermoforming moulds on the market, säntis packaging is able to maintain its leading position in know-how and quality control internationally.
